Command Decisions Wargames Center (CDWC) sits just outside Taylorsville, North Carolina, off Highway 127, in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge. It is a destination woodsball field that has been hosting paintball, airsoft, and tactical training since the early 1980s, and it remains a working, year-round facility today.

A Woodsball Playground Carved Into the Foothills

The heart of CDWC is nearly 70 acres of dedicated outdoor terrain that has been shaped and expanded over decades. Players move through more than ten distinct bases, a simulated city, a fort, and a helipad, with the field under constant revision so there is always something new to explore. The layout is built for woodsball-style play, where cover, elevation, and natural terrain matter as much as firepower. Because the ground is so diverse, the field welcomes everyone regardless of size, age, gender, or experience. Newcomers can ease into the sport on open play weekends, while seasoned teams find plenty of room to run serious tactical engagements. The setting feels less like a commercial arena and more like a genuine outdoor battlefield tucked into the countryside.

Three Sports, One Battlefield

CDWC runs three distinct games under one roof: paintball, airsoft, and Nerf wars. Paintball is the flagship, with rental packages that include anti-fog goggles, a semi-automatic marker, and pre-packed paintballs, and it operates as a field-purchased-paint-only facility. Airsoft players can rent a gun, protective goggles or mask, and a thousand BBs, with full-face protection required for anyone under eighteen. Nerf wars give the youngest players a chance to join the fun, with sessions booked by reservation for kids twelve and under who bring their own blasters and ammo. Each game type has its own dedicated schedule, pricing, and safety briefings, so families, casual players, and serious competitors all have a place on the field.

Big Scenario Weekends That Draw the Region

CDWC is best known as the home of Fulda Gap, which annually hosts two of the largest paintball and airsoft scenario events in the country. These multi-day, Cold War-themed battles pull hundreds of players from across the Southeast and beyond, turning the whole property into a sprawling campaign with objectives, alliances, and shifting fronts. Beyond Fulda Gap, the calendar is packed with themed scenario weekends such as Gangster Paradise, Platoon Leader, We Were Soldiers, Theta Cell, Operation Rising Tide, Battle of Riva Ridge, Redrum V, and even a Santa vs. Grinch airsoft event. During most scenario weekends, regular walk-on play pauses so the whole field can be dedicated to the big game, and registration and pricing are handled through the event pages for each sport.

More Than a Game: Training, Parties, and Team Building

The facility doubles as a training ground for real-world paramilitary and team-building exercises. Corporate groups use the field for teambuilding, and the staff provides security training and law-enforcement and military exercises, drawing on decades of experience. It is a versatile space that works for church groups, bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthday celebrations, and private or corporate outings. Groups of ten or more can book open-play packages, while private groups of twenty or more can reserve VIP sessions on weekdays with a deposit. Nerf wars are available for the youngest crowd, and private parties can be arranged on any day of the week with advance notice, making the field a popular choice for birthdays, corporate retreats, and team outings alike.

A Friendly Crew and a Fully Stocked Pro Shop

On-site, CDWC operates a fully equipped paintball store that sells woodsball gear and paintballs and offers both CO2 and high-pressure air refills. The shop is also a Tippmann Authorized Repair Center, so players can get their markers serviced by people who know the equipment. HPA tanks can be filled for home use as well, for those who want to keep playing between visits. The staff and referees are known for being approachable and safety-minded, guiding first-timers through their first games and keeping the pace friendly on the field. Between matches, there is a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere where players can regroup, grab air, and talk through the day’s battles before heading back out for another round.
