Dragon's Lair Family Adventure Center is located in the southwest part of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Founded by Aaron Laird and Seth Pettit, the business first opened its doors on June 5, 2017, at a smaller location before moving to its current, much larger space. The center has become a staple of the local entertainment scene, recently celebrating nine years of operation in the Cedar Rapids community.

Beyond the Pew-Pew: Tactical Laser Tag with a Story

The heart of Dragon's Lair is its mission-based tactical laser tag, a far cry from the simple "shoot and be shot" style of traditional arenas. Using high-end Laserwar equipment, the experience is designed to feel like stepping into a living video game. Players choose from a variety of taggers in the armory—from the lightweight Hornet Pistol to the sci-fi Pulsar and the realistic AK12-LT Predator—each with unique sounds and damage settings. The games are woven into a medieval fantasy narrative, with a custom AI host named Shiva briefing players before each round. With over 15 different missions, the variety is staggering. You might find yourself playing "Domination," "Capture the Flag," "Push the Payload," or unique in-house creations like "Medic-Medic" (where you must escort a friendly NPC across the field) and "Ammo Boxes" (a scavenger hunt where the final score is determined by math and a bit of luck). Each 80-minute session typically includes several different game formats, keeping the action fresh and strategic.

The Arena: A 5,000-Square-Foot Playground

The laser tag arena itself spans approximately 5,000 square feet, featuring a symmetrical lower-level floor plan with upper-level towers that provide tactical advantages. The layout is designed for tactical gameplay, offering plenty of cover and strategic pathways. While the theming is present, the real immersion comes from the mission briefings, the quality of the equipment, and the sheer variety of game modes. Before entering the field, players gather in a dedicated base room where they receive video briefings and can reactivate their gear using a "Smart Kit" on the wall, adding to the sense of being on a real mission.

More Than One Way to Adventure

While tactical laser tag is the flagship attraction, Dragon's Lair offers a full spectrum of adventures. The center features four physical escape rooms—"A Wizard's Journey," "Case Files" (a 1920s murder mystery), "Pirate Escape," and "The Cure" (a 60-minute lab escape)—along with eight different Virtual Reality escape room experiences, including "Alien Infection VR," "Dragon Tower VR," and "Space Station Tiberia VR." For those who prefer tabletop adventures, the center hosts professional Dungeons & Dragons sessions led by an experienced Dungeon Master. On Thursday nights, "Family Game Night" invites guests to enjoy a library of over 120 board games. The venue also offers Nerf Warz sessions in partnership with CR Nerf.

Built for Celebrations and Team Building

Dragon's Lair is an excellent choice for a wide range of events. The facility has two dedicated party rooms, each equipped with a fridge/freezer, private video games, and a gift table. Birthday parties are a specialty, with packages that include laser tag, a private room for food and gifts, and a special gift for the birthday child. The venue is also well-suited for corporate team-building events, leveraging the tactical laser tag and escape rooms to build communication and camaraderie.
