About

A Legacy Built on Paint and Passion

For over 29 years, Splat Tag Paintball Park has been a cornerstone of the Twin Cities paintball scene. Founded in 1996 by Darrin Johnson, a player who fell in love with the sport back in the mid-1980s, the park was never just a business — it was a dream brought to life. What started with just a handful of fields has grown into a sprawling outdoor complex spanning multiple locations, including the main Hudson, WI property and the legendary Baldwin, WI site. Every field is crafted to pull players into the action, using natural woodland terrain, forts, bunkers, and even castles to create battlefields that feel alive.

22 Fields of Pure Tactical Play

The park boasts 22 uniquely designed play areas set in a wooded, natural environment. These aren’t just open patches of grass — each course is built with elaborate set elements including full-size automobiles, sandbag bunkers, army vehicles, towers, crashed airplanes, and a 1,600 square foot castle. The variety means that no two games feel the same. Players rotate through different fields throughout the day, experiencing everything from close-quarters urban-style skirmishes to sprawling woodland battles. For those who want to keep the adrenaline going after sunset, several courses are floodlit for night games, offering a completely different kind of challenge.

Scenarios That Change the Game

Beyond standard capture-the-flag and elimination matches, Splat Tag runs some of the most immersive scenario games in the Midwest. The Jungle Rumble series takes place on the last Sunday of every month from March to October, merging multiple fields into one massive warzone with unique missions and tactical objectives that change monthly. The annual Giant Big Game draws 300+ players for an epic showdown between the Midwest Alliance and the Great Lakes Crusaders. There are also dedicated Magfed & Pump marker days for players who prefer a more skill-based, limited-ammo style of play, as well as themed events like “Code Red” and “Operation Overlord.”

Built for Groups of All Kinds

Splat Tag is a natural fit for a wide range of gatherings. Birthday parties, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate team-building outings, church groups, school field trips, and youth group events all find a home here. Private sessions are available for groups of 10 or more, with packages that include referees, safety briefings, and exclusive access to playing areas. The park also offers Low-Intensity Paintball using smaller 50-caliber paintballs, making it accessible for younger players ages 8 and up. For those flying solo or with just a friend or two, the Walk-On Games on Saturdays and Sundays are a welcoming way to jump into the action alongside other enthusiasts.

More Than Just the Game

The experience at Splat Tag extends beyond the field. The staff, led by founder Darrin Johnson, brings decades of hands-on paintball knowledge and a genuine love for the sport. Safety is taken seriously — all players receive a thorough safety briefing, goggles are mandatory on the field, and referees supervise every private session. After the game, groups can make use of on-site charcoal grills (bring your own charcoal), and pizza and snacks are available for purchase. There’s also a party space that can be reserved for post-game celebrations. The atmosphere is less about corporate polish and more about genuine, down-to-earth fun — the kind of place where the owner might have been a player himself just a few hours earlier.

A Community, Not Just a Field

What sets Splat Tag apart is the sense of belonging. Whether you show up once or every weekend, the park welcomes everyone with honest pricing, fair play, and a relaxed vibe. The season pass offers unlimited walk-on play for the entire season, making it easy for regulars to drop in anytime. With a history stretching back nearly three decades and a founder who still lives and breathes the game, Splat Tag feels less like a commercial operation and more like a gathering place for people who love the thrill of the chase, the strategy of the approach, and the camaraderie of the huddle.
