Last Friday our marketing team ditched the usual happy hour and swapped cocktails for combat—heading to Sector X in Cherry Hill, NJ for a high-tech team-building experience that turned out to be as fun as it was unifying.
Stepping into Sector X, the lobby greeted us with glossy monitors, console stations, and neon-lit décor that immediately set a gaming tone. The staff welcomed us, swiped our wristbands, and led us through an orientation where we picked our avatars, gear, and teams—“Team Alpha” vs “Team Omega.” The buzz was palpable: consoles humming, VR headsets stacked, and other groups already strategizing in the lounge area.
We opted for their Corporate Group Experience: exclusive access to the free-roam VR arena, escape-room VR session, and gaming lounge for two hours. Everything was pre-booked—gear rental, game modes, team briefing—and hosted by one of Sector X’s event coordinators, who made sure our group flowed smoothly from one zone to the next.
First, we entered the free-roam VR arena: wireless headsets, motion-tracked backpacks, and an environment where walls vanished and strategy kicked in. A sci-fi rescue mission had us charging through virtual corridors, dodging fire, coordinating cover — and celebrating every single tag. Laughter erupted when someone mis-stepped into “lava,” or we surprised each other around the corner.
Next, we moved to the escape-room style VR experience: a virtual mansion crawl turned cooperative puzzle run. We switched tactics: communicated quietly, delegated puzzle tasks, solved riddles as a team. It was less frantic, more thoughtful—perfect balance to the initial chaos.
Between games we lounged in the gaming zone—munching snacks, joking about our “kills,” and reviewing scores displayed on screens. Quiet moments of camaraderie emerged: a quiet nod here, a high-five there, and an unmistakable team energy.
The free-roam VR arena gave adrenaline and movement without physical strain.
The escape-room mode shifted pace and reinforced teamwork, communication and problem-solving.
Everything was under one roof: gear, lounge, food, private space.
The event structure felt professional but playful—well suited for a corporate group that needed to bond, not just relax.
By the end, we were grinning broadly, our wrists light from wristbands, and our cheeks sore from laughter. My voice was hoarse from shout-calls and celebratory shrieks, the guys compared who “bagged” the most tags, and someone declared next week’s meeting should happen in the VR arena (yes, joking—but only half). Driving home, I realized it wasn’t just the games that stuck—it was the teamwork and fun we shared. Sector X didn’t just host our outing—it upgraded it.
Rating: 5/5 — High-energy, immersive and perfect for teams that want to play and bond at the same time.
