Paintball grounds
There are both paintball facilities, where you can play indoors, and paintball fields for the outdoors. The last ones have a 7–10-foot fence around them that provides safety for the viewers and bypassers. It’s not only the players’ safety we’re all worried about, right? Imagine getting hit with a paintball without knowing about paintball or a nearby paintball tournament. That’s ridiculous!
The playing area is equipped with all kinds of so-called bunkers – different types of cover. You’ll see airball bunkers, sandbags, car tiers, plastic tubes, etc. Sometimes you can even see city streets being modeled on the field, all depending on the club.
Who can play
In Chicago, paintball is available to everyone over the age of 10. That’s both by the state rules and common sense as well. The younger ones can fancy themselves a game of low impact paintball, which is basically the same thing but uses low pressure markers.
Except for that, anybody who wants to play paintball can do so. There are no other requirements whatsoever.
The other good thing about paintball in Chicago is that you don’t really need to prepare for it. Just put on your most comfortable shoes and go for it. Unless you have your own equipment, in that case you would have to bring all that. And don’t worry, you don’t have to be jacked or be able to run 10 miles in a row. You determine your own pace, and even if you are a little slower than somebody else, there’s always a way to use that to your advantage.
Paintball markers
Paintball uses special weapons called markers. Just like pen markers add color to a drawing, paintball markers add color to your enemies. Or to anything else really, depending on your aim.
The markers are filled with balls in a gelatinous shell that contain a food dye. As soon as the ball hits the target, its shell shatters. Everyone marked counts as either dead or wounded.
A very common question is “Does it hurt?”. Honestly, it really depends on your pain threshold and how much you are currently into the game. And the body armor probably does something too. Women and children get additional protective equipment, while men can only wear a mask. It happens so often that players don’t even notice getting hit in the heat of the battle. But don’t be fooled, you might, or rather will, find a couple of bruises after the game. It is strictly prohibited to take off the mask during the game. Ever.
Prices
Paintball prices are rather affordable in Chicago. It’s probably not going to be more money than if you were to go to the bar. But what it will be is healthier, more fun, and it will leave you full of positive energy and jubilation. Going back to the prices, they can differ even within a single club. Booking an outdoor paintball field, for example, is always going to be less expensive than booking an indoor paintball facility, especially a custom one. You should also keep in mind that all the additional paintballs, grenades, smoke grenades, and other luxuries are charged for separately.
